I really enjoy being outside in nature. Most of the time I like to be moving through nature. Trying to see all that I can see. For me moving through nature mostly means following hiking trails.

There are several nice local trails to enjoy a short hike on near where I live. But I really crave a sense of adventure. Even if it’s not really an adventure but trails I have been on many times. And a way to have that feeling is to get on a trail with a lot of potential.

And that is why my favorite hiking trail is the Finger Lakes Trail.

I usually plan most of my races in advance. If not registered for well in advance then they are at least on my calendar so I can sign up for them if I decide I want to run it. But sometimes you just go run a race.

In 2024 I paced a friend for 20 miles of the Twisted Branch 100k. Since then we kept in touch about our running adventures and races we wanted to run. They mentioned to me that they were going to run the 2024 Mendon Trail Run.

2024 Wineglass Half Marathon

The Wineglass Marathon is a great local event that runners attend from all over. It is where I ran my first ever half marathon. I have stood along the course and cheered and photographed runners for several years. And the last three years I have volunteers as bike support for the event. And in 2024 I also volunteered to work at the Wineglass Expo helping fellow runners and their families get any of the information they need to make their day a success.

For the 2024 edition my riding partner and I were tapped to ride with the lead male runners. This was pretty exciting. I have never done that before. It was really fun to ride along and watch the race at the front of the pack unfold. I had a GoPro camera mounted to my bike and I recorded the last two thirds of the race. We were able to ride with the eventual winner until he was literally all alone on the home stretch.

Have any of you run the Wineglass Half Marathon?

I really enjoy photographing birds. I especially like birds that are mostly found in and around water. Birds that make their homes in or rely on wetlands for their survival.

Wetlands birds come in so many shapes and varieties. From duck like birds to shore birds. And even amongst shore birds there is such a wide variety of birds. From tiny birds that are hard to see to the enormous Great Blue Heron.

I have always loved animals and nature. I am not sure I really thought of birds much growing up. But when I did think of birds I thought of animals like the iconic Bald Eagle.

Bald Eagles were the one bird you saw everywhere growing up because it is the national bird in the United States and it appears in so much of our iconography. But I am here to tell you, don’t sleep on the Osprey.

2024 Running In Review

Looking back on 2024 I realize that I ran more races than I thought I had.

In running we have a way of really focusing oin a our big goals. That “A” race we spent all year targeting and train gin for. Did we hit that goal.

It is really easy to lose sight of everything else we did that year. This can be especially true if our big goals doen’t come to fruition as we had envisioned. I was able to complete my goal and I still lost sight of all the other fun I had this year.

So many miles spent with friends. Getting healthy. Making plans and meeting up for runs. Getting down to Wellsboro to run with the Tioga running Club tribe as often as I could. Starting to got to regular group runs at our local running club, the Southern Teir Running Club.

There were so many miles and smiles.

I love birds. Birds are where my photography journey really began. Watching birds. Learning about birds. Reading about birds. I never realized how omnipresent birds are.

Creative Holiday Photographs

I am not really a holiday person. I don’t like special days that make everything more crowded and more complicated than they would be on an average day. I am very bah humbug, not just for Christmas but for just about all holidays. My mindset is that I just try to celebrate life everyday. I don’t need a special holiday to make me feel more appreciative of life or all the things this world has to offer.

When I have the opportunity I really like to make the most of it. Getting out on an all day adventure to photographs a variety of different subjects. On this particular trip the subject was waterfalls.

Not just any waterfalls, but frozen waterfalls. Frozen waterfalls might be the best kind of waterfall. They just look so unique.

So, when their weather was cold enough long enough I picked a day and I set off. The plan was to drive out to one waterfall I specifically wanted to go to that was 1.5 hours away. Then slowly make my way back home. On the way I would stop at a bunch of the other waterfalls I would encounter. Along the way.

My first stop was Carpenter Falls. This tall waterfall features a large stream of water flowing off a steep cliff. The water plummets down into the bottom of a gorge below.
