I have been struggling a lot to create any photography this winter. I can’t remember the last time I photographed anything. I don’t know if it just the times we are living in getting me down. Or that I have just been too distracted and unfocused. Allowing the flow of social media to wash over me. Or maybe I am trying too hard to find “balance” by spending a little bit of… Read More
“The deadliest enemies of nations are not their foreign foes; they always dwell within their borders. … The nation blessed above all nations is she in whom the civic genius of the people does the saving day by day, by acts without external picturesqueness; by speaking, writing, voting reasonably; by smiting corruption swiftly; by good temper between parties; by the people knowing true men when they see them, and preferring them as… Read More
I enjoy photographing anything that creates a sense of texture. This can appear in so many different ways. From man made substances to natural occurring phenomena. From enormous mountains to tiny grains of sand. One thing I often feel drawn to is ice. Ice can occur in so manny different shapes, sizes, and forms. Ice occurs in so many different circumstances. But the one universal circumstance for ice is that it has… Read More
When I have the opportunity I really like to make the most of it. Getting out on an all day adventure to photographs a variety of different subjects. On this particular trip the subject was waterfalls. Not just any waterfalls, but frozen waterfalls. Frozen waterfalls might be the best kind of waterfall. They just look so unique. The water flow changes and ice… Read More
One of the nicest places to hike in the winter is Taughannock Falls State Park. The park features a 1 mile trail that is pretty level and relatively easy to navigate even in the snow. And as a reward for braving the cold and the snow there is the 200+ foot waterfall to view at the end of the trail. The waterfall is quite a site throughout this time of year as… Read More
Always take a minute to look up. You never know what might be hanging over your head. When I get out for photography in winter I like to look for interesting ice formations. Icicles are obviously a good choice when you can find them. Fortunately in our area there are a variety of gorges to visit and look for interesting icicle formations. These icicles were hanging from the gorge wall at Watkins… Read More
One photo a day challenge: Day 66. Today I spent the morning out on some trails with friends. We hiked at Watkins Glen State Park. The park is most well known for all of its waterfalls along the gorge trail. But this time of year the gorge trail is closed. We spent our time hiking the upper rim trails. Even those trails were quite icy. Make sure you wear proper footwear. I… Read More
One photo a day challenge: Day 13. Today I set out to focus my daily photo challenge photos on a specific idea. I wanted to capture some interesting photographs showcasing the ice on the rocky ledges I see every day. In recent years it seems like Upstate New York hasn’t had many time frames where there has been snowfall that has persisted for long periods of time. Our winters just haven’t seemed… Read More
