My Favorite Bird Of Prey: Osprey

I have always loved animals and nature. I am not sure I really thought of birds much growing up. But when I did think of birds I thought of animals like the iconic Bald Eagle.
Bald Eagles were the one bird you saw everywhere growing up because it is the national bird in the United States and it appears in so much of our iconography. But I am here to tell you, don’t sleep on the Osprey.

Osprey might not be as large as Bald Eagles but I think they are a bit more exciting to look at. The markings on their wings are beautiful especially when the wings are extended. They have bright contrast between their white and darker colored feathers so they stand out. And they have a beautiful mask across their faces like a superhero.
I do not remember ever seeing an osprey or even hearing about one growing up. Now they have made such a huge comeback in our area that during the summer you don’t have to even travel to see them. I get to witness them build nests and raise their young right in my home town.

But there are also many places to go and see them in other environments as well. If you are visiting someplace with a body of water there it a possibility you will see an Osprey. Our local Osprey will visit and fish at a very small lake in the middle of town at a local park. And you can watch them hunt while you take a stroll on the walking path.
And who is more daring than the masked Osprey. As they rise high in the air. Then plummet and dive headfirst towards the water. Extending their legs out in front only at the last second as they are about to crash into the water and catch their fish.
