Exploring More of the FLT

I had the opportunity to get out for a nice long exploration run today. I just had to decide where I wanted to run. I have really been enjoying exploring the Finger Lakes Trail and I decided I wanted to explore more of it. I wanted to run on a section that would be new to me. The question is where. There are so many options. I decided I wanted to go up to the Ithaca area and make a day of it. I was thinking about either starting in Danby State Forest or at the outlet of Robert Treman State Park and go up to Sweedler Preserve. I wanted to run about 8 miles out and back for a total of 16 miles. I decided that I would pick up where I have ended on the farthest out I have run in that direction, which is where the trail leaves Robert Treman State Park.

I wanted to make this a nice casual run and enjoy some nature. I took my phone and my GoPro so I could capture some images of the trails. That is part of what I love about trail running, it has allowed me to experience and capture nature where I never would have been able to before. This trail run did not go as I had hoped especially in the beginning. I continuously tripped and stumbled along the path. Just not picking up my feet. I don’t know if I was stumbling along the path because I wasn’t running hard and focused or what. It was just not going smoothly. At one point I tripped so hard that I just about peeled the sole of the shoe off of the upper. I ripped a big split in the shoes along the seam of the upper and the sole. Thankfully these were an old pair of trail shoes. They were actually the first pair of trail shoes I had ever had, but I loved them and I liked running in them occasionally. They had served me well but now their time had come. I will miss you my super light weight, minimalist, do it all Teva Sphere trail shoes.

Then there is the other aspect that didn’t go so well, and that is the exploring a new section of trail. There was a long stretch on the road where I didn’t see any trail blazes along the road or on signs or anywhere. Maybe I just missed them. But it was a long section of road where you begin to doubt yourself and think that you should have gotten off the road by now. I have in the past missed turns to get off the road. My friends that have gone on trail adventures with me will tell you all about it. Luckily I had bought the downloadable maps and was using them with the Avenza app so I had GPS telling me if I was on the trail or not, and I was on the trail the whole time I was on the road and eventually came to the area where I left the road. Eventually I came to another section that was confusing. I emerged from the woods into a large field that was mostly overgrown except for a few areas. Once again I did not see any obvious blazes; maybe I just missed them again. I headed out in one of the two different directions where the field had been cleared figuring one of them had to be the trail. Turns out I chose wrong, but after a short time I was able to meet back up with the trail without having to backtrack. It just meant some bushwhacking through an overgrown field. As I trudged along through this field I was watching the map on the Avenza app and I could see that I was going in the same direction of the trail but I was slowly getting farther and farther away from it. I was basically tracking parallel to the FLT. I must have missed something. I started to back track and figured I must have been supposed to turn out of the field and into the woods at some point, but I never saw a place to do that. Where I was at the time there was a thick hedge row where you couldn’t see the woods. Eventually I found a thinning in the brush and pushed through into the woods. Now just navigating by GPS on the map looking for trail blazes and watching as my dot on the map got closer and closer to the trail. Eventually I found it and was back on the FLT. This was at about mile 5 and I was about to give up and turn back because I was so frustrated with not being able to find the trail. I would have had to turn back without the Avenza app.

Thankfully I found the trail and I was off and running again. I finished out that 8 miles almost reaching Danby State Forest which I would have liked to get to but it wasn’t really worth adding any extra miles at that point. I turned and began the run back to my car. The run back turned out to be much less eventful. No getting lost. No tripping and falling. It felt much more enjoyable. Maybe it was due to the fact that the return trip was essentially a nice meandering 8 mile assent while the way out was an 8 mile climb. That could have something to do with it. Especially since I much prefer going down than up. The only event occurred when at one point I emerged from the woods and heard a loud buzzing. It was like there could be a bee hive nearby. I looked around and didn’t see anything. I figured there just must be bees out in the field of flowers that I hear. Then all of a sudden something stung me. I took off at a sprint. Not so fun when you have already gone over 10 miles and have 3 or 4 still to go, but I wanted to get away from whatever the hell had just stung me. As I ran I determined that I think it was a huge horsefly that had bitten me as it continued to chase me down the trail trying to bite me. I even swatted it out of the sky once but that did not stop it. Eventually it gave up the chase as I reentered a wooded area.

As I began to feel better about the run my creative juices began to flow. I recorded several videos of the return trip using my GoPro and I also took some still photos using both my GoPro and my phone. The downhills were nice. I could have run faster but this run wasn’t about speed or hard effort, it was about fun and enjoying nature. I never actually felt like I was pushing too hard at any point during the run, except when I was trying to escape that horsefly. I figured that since I never really felt like I was struggling either on the uphills or downhills that there must not have been too much climbing. I figured I would be below 2000 ft elevation gain. I was surprised when I checked my Strava and saw that I was at almost exactly 2000 ft. So I am happy to have gotten out for a run exploring a new section of trail and enjoying myself and still getting in a decent amount of climbing which is where I really need to work anyway when I train. So all in all it was a good day.

I ended the day with a nice soak in the creek. I really needed that. Despite not pushing myself very hard on this run I have been battling some issues with hip pain and ankle pain and that cold water felt soooooo good. IT was amazing. I think I have another opportunity to go explore some trails again soon. So it is either pick up where I left off here and start at Danby State Forest or go the opposite direction and start at the farthest point that direction I have been at Birdseye Hollow Park. Oh the hard choices one has to make.

2018 Seneca 7

Sometimes I feel like I’m the luckiest person in the world. I have gotten to do so many things that make me happy and make life worth living. Somehow I was fortunate enough o break out of my shell and meet this great group of people that call themselves runners. I have fallen in with this group of people and we enjoy life together running and non-running alike. We have developed this little Elmira running crew who I have spent a lot of time running with over the past few years.

In 2017 we all wanted to run Seneca 7 together but we were not able to get registered for our own team. Several of us did get to experience Seneca 7 that year but not all together. In 2018 we were fortunate enough to be able to all be on one team together.

So for those who don’t know what Seneca 7 is, it is a relay race that teams of 7 run around Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes region of NY. The race is a total of 77.7 miles long. So when you sign up for Seneca 7 you are committing to a daylong event where you will spend the majority of the day traveling with 6 other people in a van. That might sound crazy, and maybe it is. But when your best friends are runners it is like one of the best days you can have.

You run you, you watch, you cheer. You drive, you navigate, you eat, you do ….. other things all in close proximity of your friends. You have to be very accepting of others to participate in this kind of event. You will be spending a lot of time together and might get to know each other better than you thought you would if you didn’t already know each other well. Seven friends in a van spending the day doing what they love, it’s like a party to me.

You are around hundreds of other people who enjoy what you do and are about the same level of crazy as you. Except maybe those bike teams, they are something special.

I loved being able to do this event with 7 of my best friends. The hardest part for me was the fact that I am a photographer and I like to photograph EVERYTHING. The weather was terrible. It was rainy and snowy. When you are packed in a van like sardines there isn’t room to bring the heavy duty camera equipment that can withstand some rain and snow. I brought cameras but most of the equipment wasn’t durable enough to brave the elements with. I had been really excited about the opportunity to document this event with my friends. Now I had to figure out how to make that happen as best I could. When you are a photographer it is hard to accept anything but the best quality of photographs you can get. At least it is for me. Maybe that is a flaw I need to work on, but it drives me.

I did have my GoPro with me and I worked with that tool as best I could to capture as many moments from our race as I could. I am not as experienced with the GoPro as I am with my other equipment and the super wide angle lens of a GoPro is less than ideal for photographing an event where you can’t necessarily be close to your subject. But the GoPro could withstand the weather. So I had to make it work.

I took a mix of single shot photos, time lapse photos, and videos to try and capture as much as I could of the event. Since I first began incorporating a GoPro into my photography I have been shooting an increasing amount of video. Most of this video I have recorded while I have been running. When you shoot video when you are running there will inevitably be some shaking of the camera. I have a steady cam to use but with the poor weather I also could not use that. So I shot video with my GoPro while running. I didn’t think it would be too bad. One thing I did not consider is that when I normally shoot video when I am running I am running at a more casual pace for me. During this race I was basically running all out. So when you try to run all out and hold a camera steady everything’s basically works against holding the camera steady. So the video was much shakier than I would have liked, but at least I recorded our adventure together.

I am happy to have such good friends. I am happy to be able to capture our fun times together even if it doesn’t come out as well as I would like. I can’t wait to record more of our fun times together.

Today’s Running Partner

The more I develop myself over the years the more I learn that things I love and that are important to me fit together. I have been a long time dog lover. And over the last few years I have become an increasingly avid runner. I have been making more time to run than to do most other things in my life these days. I never thought I would say that. As I have been getting more into running I have really been wanting to be able to run with one of my dogs. I have tried in the past to run with one of our dogs but it didn’t really work out well for either of us. But I am thinking that I may try to get more dedicated to this idea. So today I set out with my new running partner today.

Running together will require a lot of learning and training on both our parts. Brynn will need to work on walking and running on my left so we can stay on the proper side of traffic when running and stay away from cars (something I should have been teaching her all along, my bad.) Brynn will also need to learn to stay by my side and not get too far out ahead. She will also need to learn to stay constant and not stop to sniff or investigate interesting things while we are running.

I will need to learn to modify my running plans to suit Brynn’s needs. Now I have to think about both of us instead of just me. That means extra water for her as well as for me if we are out for long runs as well as extra night lights if we run before or after the sun is out. More planning will be required on my part.

The best thing is that on what was basically our first run together it went pretty smoothly. Brynn didn’t get too distracted to stop and smell things or try to rip my arm off to run and chase things like squirrels and other dogs. I owe this to the hard work with training my wife and I put in when we first got her, although we need to be more consistent with it. “Leave it.” is a magic phrase that will make your life with your dog much easier if you teach them that cue. Trust me.

Brynn can dust me in a sprint or in repeated sprints over and over. She seems to have limitless energy playing n the back yard and fetching her Chuck It ball. or even just ramming around the house playing with her infinite number of toys. It was kind of nice to see that even though she can wear me out in short bursts of energy I can outlast her in distance running thanks to my training. We went out for what is a short run for me these days, just a 5k. Brynn started off strong, perhaps too strong. An error that I am sure many of my runner friends can relate to. I started off relatively slow for me.  Brynn started off out in front of me at the end of her leash. She still looked like she was just trotting along out in front, and not really exerting herself. However, by the time we were inside of a mile left to be done she had slowed considerably. She was either beside me or just behind me most of that last mile.

She didn’t seem to be working too hard nor panting much, but she was definitively slowing down and getting tired from the sustained exertion. It’s nothing like the heavy panting and raged breathing and rapidly expanding chest she exhibits during her sprints across our yard to fetch her ball. She is definitely a sprinter and not a distance runner at this point. Something I definitely would have said for myself at one point, even though I really never was even a sprinter.

So, Brynn and I will continue to work together. Hopefully frequently to work on her running with me on leash in hopes that I can run with her at events that welcome dogs some day. The sad part is I like that she is currently tired out and sleeping under my desk as I write this after our run. I am not sure if I really want to keep taking her out regularly and build up her stamina so that she will have even more energy and be able to run longer and longer and then require longer and longer runs to tire her out so she comes home and is peacefully sleeping at my feet. I like tired Brynn. I like that it only took 3 miles to tire her out. Here’s to the future of a new running-mate.

Now I just have to work on incorporating photography into my actual runs. But I have a few ideas about that too. Stay tuned.

Kenya

Kenya seems to be the kind of dog that is ready for anything. She was not particularly energetic when I photographed her but you could tell she has the energy just ready to unleash it when the right activity is offered to her.

Kenya is a friendly happy dog who is ready to hop up on the seat with you and be petted or is equally content trotting around finding her own way to keep happy and busy.

Kenya wasn’t interested in playing with any of the tennis balls I tried to entice her with so she might be interested in other types of toys. Maybe she is just too smart for a game of fetch. Perhaps she thinks that since I threw the ball I should go get it.

Great photos of dogs at the shelter help dogs find homes faster. The faster shelter staff can connect dogs with their forever homes the better for everyone. Dogs get to go home and humans get to start a life with a new best friend.

Meet Your Next Best Friend

I’ve made a lot of friends over the years and if you are a dog lover like me you count a lot of dogs among them. Two of my best friends became part of my lives completely by coincidence. We met our dogs Brynn and Kira at the Chemung County SPCA and they became family.

I am working on a project to highlight some of the amazing dogs that pass through the Chemung County SPCA on their way to their forever homes. This project will feature large print photographs of some of the dogs that have been at the shelter to see. It will be on display at the Chemung County Historical Society Museum for all to see.
