I love to get out into nature. Often when I plan to go outside there is a specific reason. I want to photograph a waterfall. Or I want to hike some trails.
And some places are great for specific experiences. But what really can make a place special is if it is a haven of a wide variety of natural experiences. This is what I love about Tanglewood Nature Center.

I often like to spend time photogrpahing things that might be considered ordanary. Parts of life that seem mundane. Something that is just normal.
Take that thing and shine a light on it. Stop and look more closely. See it for what it is. Don’t just ignore it.
This is what I think of when I think of the often Maligned Whited Tailed Deer.

Hiking and Trail running are two of my favorite activities. I love getting outside in nature. At a faster or slower pace with or without a camera I always enjoy time on hiking trails.
There are many different places where you can access hiking trails: Local nature centers, Land preserves, state forests, Wildlife management areas, State parks and local parks to name a few.

But some trails consist of a large variety of these places all strung together and also include private landowners. The Finger Lakes Trail Conference works with public and private landowners to maintain the Finger Lakes Trail that spans hundreds of miles through out New York. And these trails are maintained by volunteers.

I love trail running. It is one of my favorite activities. Getting out in nature. Moving on my feet. It is a great feeling.
So, I really love it when an organization puts on a great trail running event. I am not usually the kind of person who likes to run the same events over and over. I usually prefer to experience new things. Take on new challenges.
But the Tyoga Running Club puts one an event that keep drawing me back. The Green Monster Trail Challenge is a great time hosted by a great organization. Green Monster features a 15k, 25k, and 50k and so far I have run the 15k and 25k multiple times, but have yet to take on the 50k

I have had fun hiking up several mountains over the years. Usually one of the best things about hiking up a mountain is the outstanding views of the surrounding area. Although I have climbed my fair share of mountains that did not have much if any view. But today I am here to talk about my favorite view.
Hiking out to scenic views can be very rewarding. Sometimes it takes a lot of effort. But other times you can take a relatively short walk without to steep of elevation and be rewarded with stunning views.
The funniest part about the place where I saw my favorite scenic mountain views is I didn’t have to take a single step to see the views. I t is a mountain that I have had on my bucket list to hike, but I have not yet had an opportunity to go hike it.
Mount Washington in New Hampshire.

There are 3 key variables to think about in photography. ISO which controls how sensitive you film/camera is to light. Shutter speed, which controls how long light is let into the camera. Aperture or F stop. This controls how much light is allowed in through your lens.
If you notice anything about these 3 variables it is that they are all related to how light interacts with your camera. Each of these variable affect the results of a photo in other ways as well. What I want to examine is how aperture not only affects the light but also the depth of field in an image.

Even though I love running now I think my previous relationship with football and dreaming of being a sports photographer and collecting sports cards weighs in on this one.
I also think that a photo of a sport like football really captures the action more than in a sport like running. A still image is challenging to capture the performance of running which is speed and movement.

At this point I have not been able to run regularly for around 2 months. In mid April I decided to try to run 3 miles at our local group run, because my leg had been feeling fine with everything else I had been doing, which excluded only running. I ran 3 miles. But it was quite painful the entire time.
Next up was Hills Creek Challenge on May 3rd. I had hoped to do at least some amount of running. But that was not in the cards. My leg was still a little sore. I could very gingerly trot a little at times, particularly on downhills. But I enjoyed hiking 18 miles with my wife.
Next up was Sehgahunda Trail Relay on May 17th. The plan was to not run until that event and just hope for the best. I have completed this event multiple times including every permutation of participation one can do. My introduction was part of a 4 person relay team. Eventually I ran the solo full marathon distance. I have also completed it as part of a 2 person and 3 person relay team.

I am not always a morning person. And I am definitely not always a wake up before sunrise person. Especially in the summer when the days are longer and the sun rises earlier in the morning.
But my job has gotten me used to getting up early for the morning commute often getting to see the sun rise on my job. And for a while I was in the habit of getting up at 5 am every day. But right now getting up early has been a struggle.
However, when we take a trip somewhere and we are fortunate enough to be somewhere that the sunrise holds potential to be particularly beautiful I will make a special effort to get up and see the sunrise at least once during the trip.

Who doesn’t love a beautiful sunset?
Thinking about sunsets makes me think how incredible of a natural phenomenon it actually is. Sunset happens every day. Every single day. It is kind of simple and yet amazing.
There is a possibility that you will get to witness a beautiful sunset 365 days a year. And on top of that you don’t even necessarily have to go anywhere. You can sit at home and see the sunset.
You don’t even have to go outside. Need a quick refresh and a burst of natural wonder to perk you up? Take a minute and look out your window. Maybe you will get exactly what you need.
