I love animals. Dogs and cats and the like. All the animals we let into our lives. The ones we share the most intimate moments with.
The intersection between humans and animals has a profound impact on our world. It can be death and horror as is demonstrated in our factory farming of animals for food. Or it can be unconditional love and support as demonstrated with the bonds we form with animals we share our homes with.

If you know me, you know that I am unabashedly a dog person. Dogs are my gold standard for animal companions. But, I am also an animal lover.
I love all animals. I enjoy the company of just about any animals. Except spiders. I respect their place in nature, but they can just leave me alone.
And I most animals are beautiful in their own way. And that goes for cats.

I love it when our communities are active and doing things. I don’t get out and create this type of imagery as much as I used to, but highlighting people in the community and the events and activities going on can have a powerful impact.
I used to go to local events more often and bring my camera to photograph them. Local street painting festivals. Suicide awareness and support events. Events hosted by other local organizations.
These days my event photography is almost exclusively running events, which I enjoy. But this is probably the most niche of niches to occupy.

I love camping. My wife and I started going on regular camping trips years ago and it has been one of the most enjoyable experiences. Often when we camp we will take one of our dogs. But sometimes the dogs are not amenable to the idea.
A few years ago We attempted to take Colton, our Bernese Mountain Dog, and River, our Border Collie, on a short camping trip together. We had never taken two dogs camping at the same time. And these two dogs in-particular had personalities that might make it challenging. And that is why it was planned to be a short trip. And the trip ended up being even shorter as we barely made it through the night and went home early the next morning due to the dog’s combined antics.
River was young during this first outing. She has been my adventure dog. And ever since this trip I have wanted to try taking her camping again to see how she would do.

Every once in a while I will create more conventional portrait style photographs. This usually happens around family gatherings. Events where people are involved in one thing or another and I can be off to the side and point my camera at them without them being so aware of it.
I generally create candid style images. I just like to see how someone is naturally responding to a situation. Life doesn’t happen in a vacuum it is real and raw and we don’t always look our best or have time to prepare for it.
And that is what candid photos have the ability to capture. The realness of life.

My art centers around nature. The motto of my business is The Foundation of All Things Natural.
With those defining characteristics I find my work taking many different avenues. But what ties it all together most often is this feeling of the natural.
There isn’t much I don’t find interesting or beautiful about photography. But there are certain things that I am not particularly drawn to myself in my work as a photographer. The biggest of those things is photographing people.

There are uncountable different types of insects in the world. If I wrote a post about every single type of insect I have photographed we could be here a while. That is if I could even identify what type of insect it was or if it was different from something else I have photographed before.
So instead I created a few broad categories to write about separately. Insects that are easily identifiable by most people. Butterflies and bees and the like will have a separate post. But to make this easier on me and probably you too I am just going to lump most other insects into this one post.

As I was going through my list of subjects I have pointed a camera at I came to fish. I thought it would be really interesting to look through some of these images and pick out a few that I liked the best.
I wasn’t really sure what I would see as I browsed the images. I don’t photogrpah fish of any sort very often. And I don’t often have occasion to return to these images for review.
I initially thought I would pick photos of freshwater fish. I don’t do underwater photography but I have been able to photograph fish occasionally that rise to the surface of ponds, lakes, or rivers. And there were some images like that, which I enjoyed looking at. But none of them stood out.

I really don’t like shopping. I generally try to avoid it. But on a recent vacation I did buy some clothes. Turns out it did not all fit me. The closest location to return the clothes is 2 hours away from me in Rochester, New York.
So, how to justify a 2 hour drive to return clothes that don’t fit? Photography for the win.
I have a guide book for waterfalls in New York and I have been slowly trying to check off as many as I can to see and photograph. And I know there are several in the Rochester area.

This is like a chicken or the egg problem for which came first in my photography. Photographing flowers or photographing insects. I enjoy both these days and have for a while.
When photographing flowers it is inevitable that you would notice more and more insects the longer you looked. So I suspect that my initial interest was in the flowers. And then upon discovering the insects I turned my lens there next.
And when paying attention to flowers one of the most easily noticeable insects is the humble bee.
