I mostly manage to miss out on opportunities to photograph caterpillars. They are not a subject I often think about intentionally planning to photograph. I even often manage to miss out on photographing the most predictable to find caterpillar, the Monarch Butterfly Caterpillar. Monarch Butterfly Caterpillars are found in fairly specific time of year. This makes it easier to know when to look for them. The next question is where to look… Read More

I love the look of this almost completely white tiny little butterfly contrasted against a green leaf. This is also a fairly unique photo for me at least in a certain aspect. I was able to create this photo using a 60mm macro lens. That means that I had to get really up close to this little butterfly to make it appear this large in the frame. Most of my butterfly photos… Read More

I love going up to Cornell Botanic Gardens to do some macro photography. When I go there for macro photography my intended subject is flowers. It is always nice to find some other subjects in the mix as well. One of the nicest things about nature photography is you never know what will turn up. When you are looking to photograph flowers the last thing you really want to see is flowers… Read More

I will photograph just about anything. Even if I do not actually know what the subject of my photograph actually is. This happens to me a lot with insects. I know a fair amount and I have used field guides to learn about and identify insects. But there are so many different insects that it quickly become a daunting task. So I know that this is a tiny little green insect. I… Read More

I love close up details of random objects. If you enjoy creating photographs of any subject one of the best things you can have is a macro lens. A macro lens can turn any object into something interesting. It can allow you to pick just one aspect of an object and turn that into the focal point of a photo. I chose to get up close and focus on the textured edge… Read More

Over the course of the last several days of my one photo a day challenge that I completed in 2021 I was waiting for a flower to bloom. I had moved my annuals from outside to inside hoping they would survive the winter. One plant in particular, a gerbera daisy, was doing quite well. It actually seemed to be thriving inside. The Gerbera daisy plant had actually developed a flower blossom. My… Read More

In this image there is a tiny salamander crawling through some synthetic mulch in our yard. I found this salamander to photograph in the spring of 2017. It was during the month of April. The camera body was Nikon D300S. And the lens I used was a Nikon 60mm macro lens. The camera setting when the shutter button is pressed was ISO 640, 60mm, f/3.2, 1/125 sec. I used Lightroom for post… Read More

One photo a day challenge: Day 360. Having a macro lens is great for exploring small objects. I also love it for exploring textures. I am not sure there are more interesting ways to explore texture than with a macro lens. Especially if you shoot with the macro lens set at an aperture as wide open as it can be. This really sets the focus on the subject of the image and… Read More

One photo a day challenge: Day 332. I’ve been watching as the geraniums I brought inside continue to grow through the fall. The plants have been growing flower buds. Patiently waiting for the flowers to develop enough to bloom. Finally the geranium flowers are beginning to blossom.

One photo a day challenge: Day 323. I love the variety of colors in this photo. Using some decorative corn cobs. Getting close up for a macro shot featuring just a small group of kernels. I focused on a section where the kernels were a little more irreguluar. Trying to find a spot that represented a wider variety of colors as well. Angling the lens to reduce the depth of field. Kernels… Read More
