I had never heard of a Strawflower until a couple of years ago. I really like them. So different than other flowers. The petals on the Strawflower are the opposite of most other flowers. Instead of being soft and delicate the petals on a strawflowers are firm and strong. Firm but not brittle. The petals hold their shape as they unfold from around the center. I love the pointy spikey shapes and… Read More
My wife loves roses. We have tried to grow rose bushes at our house on multiple occasions. We have not been successful. We look for beautiful plants. Then we dig a hole in the ground and plant them. WE had one bush that was clinging to life for a few years. Each year it would grow one small new branch and get a tiny flower. Then that one finally fully died. I… Read More
Brightly colored flower blossom. Close up. It almost looks like a star to me. The center of the flower blossom. Color radiating out from there. The color is most intense in the center. As the streaks of color emanate farther from the center they lose their intensity. The same way the light from a star does. Photo details: Nikon D300. Nikon 60mm f/2.8. Focal length 60mm. ISO 400. 1/2000 sec. f/3.8. Thank… Read More
Often in my flower photography I focus on detail. More likely one specific detail. This image is different. I focused on one specific element. But that element almost completely erases detail. The focus in this image is the very tip of the closest flower petal. At a shallow depth of field this puts everything else out of focus. This image is more a study of shape and color than anything else. Photo… Read More
I love Milkweed. They are critical components in our environment to support wildlife. One thing I like about Milkweed is that I feel like I can create images of those flowers that are different than the way most people see them, Milkweed flowers grow atop tall stalks. The flowers themselves grow in large clusters of smaller individual blossoms. I don’t know if many people stop to take a close up look at… Read More
Lilies are beautiful flowers, but I struggle with them as photographic subjects. A flower on a lily takes up a lot of space. Their flowers are large and expansive in every way. The flower of a lily spreads out wide from side to side and from top to bottom. They even stretch forth from front to back. I really like to shoot flowers close up and using a shallow depth of field…. Read More
Hedge Bindweed Looking for a subtly beautiful flower to photograph? Look down. Follow the ground. It might be right next to your foot. The Hedge Bindweed grows like a vine along the ground. Spreading out amongst the other foliage. The flowers can pop up anywhere there is available space. At the edge of a yard or along a river. I love how the light is striking this one flower and the rest… Read More
I really love these yellow flowers. They grow wild along edges of environments. Roadsides. Fields and forests. Just about anywhere. The Bird’s-Foot Treefoil usually begin to appear in the early summer. The flowers grow low along the ground. They form this spreading vine like structure. To get macro shots of these flowers I have to get low to the ground. This image is one of the more close up views I have… Read More
One photo a day challenge: Day 232. I headed outside to photograph some of the nature surrounding our house. I figured I would end up focusing on flowers. As I began photographing I didn’t really have a plan. Photographing a few flowers here and there randomly. Walking around the yard to see what was growing. What was nature up to. Flowers in bloom. And there were a bunch of caterpillars on our… Read More
One photo a day challenge: Day 198. Today was a long day with a lot of driving involved throughout the morning. We tried to squeeze in some fun on our way home though. We stopped at the Cornell Botanic Gardens. One of my favorite places. Seriously, there are not many better places to go if you want to practice a wide variety of photography. There was a lot of time spent driving… Read More
