A Red-Winged Blackbird is almost exactly as advertised. Red-Winged Blackbirds are an almost exclusively black bird. The only part of a Red-Winged Blackbird that is not black is this little burst of color on each wing. This patch of color found on the Red-Winged Blackbird wing is mostly red and sometimes has a yellow portion as well. One of the most fun things about Red-Winged Blackbirds is that if you like to… Read More
Baltimore Orioles are always welcome early spring visitors. Bright orange contrasted with deep black colors in the male birds. Baltimore Orioles will visit back yards. They will eat nectar or oranges. I love to feed the Baltimore Orioles oranges that I cut in half and then spike on nails protruding from my deck railing. This photo is one of our visitors from May in 2020 here in upstate New York. Photo details:… Read More
It is so cool to watch animals living there lives. What is more essential to life than eating food. This image captures a Pileated Woodpecker eating grapes off the vine. I love the large body of the Pileated Woodpecker hanging from the thin grape vines. You can see the Pileated Woodpecker plucking a grape from the vine. The motion of the Pileated Woodpecker’s head as it picks a grape to eat is… Read More

One of the best things about being a runner is that there are so many other people out there that enjoy the same thing you do. There are whole communities just waiting for you to show up and say hi. Or in my case to just show up stand around awkwardly and say nothing. Then all those wonderful people will talk to you because you are there and you also love running…. Read More
This Broad-Winged Hawk showed up and sat vigil on this dead tree. Watching. Waiting. Patient. Never saw the hawk move much. I didn’t see the bird come or go. I am not sure if it ever found its prey. But it was awesome to have an opportunity to simply watch and observe this Broad-Winged Hawk for a good long time. I stood and watched this hawk through a Nikon 300mm f4 lens… Read More
Growing up I loved animals. I was very interested in wildlife. But I did not grow up with much exposure to wildlife in any real way in my actual in person experience. I remember being fascinated with animals though. One animal that always interested me was the Bald Eagle. Bald Eagles are simply iconic. They are the bird often seen soaring overhead in movies, despite the sound often played with them often… Read More
If you have never seen a spotted salamander you should really try to see one. They are phenomenal creatures. Salamanders are usually thought of as tiny little things. But these spotted salamanders are as big as your hand. I was fortunate enough to see these creatures right in my own yard. This image was created in the spring of 2009 during April. The camera body I used when creating this image was… Read More
Going out to nature related events always has potential for photography opportunities. This photograph was created during a Migration Celebration event in New York. We were there to celebrate spring migration of birds, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find other subjects as well. In creating this image I used my Nikon D300 camera body and my Nikon 300mm lens with 1.4 teleconverter. The settings on this image were ISO 640, 420mm,… Read More
One photo a day challenge: Day 365. Well We did it. 1 photo a day for 365 days. That was quite an experience. I was hoping that this Gerbera Daisy would be in full bloom for the final photo of this project. And while it wasn’t quite in full bloom I was able to create some interesting photos. The petals had opened up farther than they were previously. I was able to… Read More
