My Favorite Ice Photos

I enjoy photographing anything that creates a sense of texture. This can appear in so many different ways. From man made substances to natural occurring phenomena. From enormous mountains to tiny grains of sand.
One thing I often feel drawn to is ice. Ice can occur in so manny different shapes, sizes, and forms. Ice occurs in so many different circumstances.

But the one universal circumstance for ice is that it has to be cold. I often find it challenging to be motivated to go out in the cold to take photographs. And due to that I don’t have as many photographs of cool ice textures as I would like.
These two images or rom quite some time ago. Maybe representing just how infrequently I get out to photograph in the cold. And perhaps just how less cold our winters have actually been in recent years.
At least until this year. This is the first year our rivers were regularly frozen over in a long time. And I regret not getting out to photograph these occurrences. I was busy getting my regular doses of cold weather while running and could not summon the courage to go out for photography.

In the first image I love the contrast of the grainy look of the ice compared to the smoother wavier look of the water. And the angle of the image changes how it feels from top to bottom as the focus is on a narrow section and the rest gets progressively softer.
The second image is a more a view from above of the Chemung River. And you can see how it must have frozen and thawed a few times to create the textures. And it has this light dusting of snow to create contrast.
