Creatures to photograph can be found anywhere. This tiny salamander was found right outside my house. The photo in this post was taken using my Nikon D300S camera body and 60mm macro lens. To create this image the setting in camera were: ISO 1250, 60mm, f/3.3, 1/100 sec. Then for this blog post I selected a Lightroom preset in post processing. The preset I chose creates a spotlight effect on the salamanders… Read More

Going out to nature related events always has potential for photography opportunities. This photograph was created during a Migration Celebration event in New York. We were there to celebrate spring migration of birds, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find other subjects as well. In creating this image I used my Nikon D300 camera body and my Nikon 300mm lens with 1.4 teleconverter. The settings on this image were ISO 640, 420mm,… Read More

One photo a day challenge: Day 296. Had a fun day birding at one of my favorite locations, Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. It was a great day for birding. Our first lap around the wildlife drive was full of birds. Lots of waterfowl. A surprising number of Bald Eagle sightings. We had at least 6 Bald Eagle sightings. I love all the variety of ducks especially all the Northern Pintails we saw…. Read More

One photo a day challenge: Day 286. In photography things don’t always go to plan. Especially in photographing any type of wildlife. There is the simple fact that sometimes despite any planning your planned subject just doesn’t show up. But sometimes things work out. Today while outside mowing the lawn I saw a praying mantis. I stopped and photographed it with my Samsung S21 Ultra. The mantis did not seem to be… Read More

One photo a day challenge: Day 220. We went to the park for a walk today. There were rabbits everywhere. Seemed like a good time to make friends with the tiny woodland creatures. The rabbits at the park are not particularly shy. If I am slow and cautious enough. The rabbits will adjust to my presence and I can get closer. This is probably the most close up photo of a rabbit… Read More

One photo a day challenge: Day 200. Sometimes we are fortunate enough to be able to photograph subjects we weren’t expecting. It is a great feeling to have the opportunity to be able to create beautiful images of subjects we weren’t even looking for. I am not often presented with the opportunity to photograph snakes. But it is always nice when such opportunities turn out so nicely.

One photo a day challenge: Day 195. I have been seeing more snakes in the yard lately. I always enjoy seeing all varieties of wildlife in our yard. Even the snakes. Despite seeing more snakes in recent days I haven’t had any good opportunities to photograph any of the snakes recently. Today I went outside thinking I would try to photograph some of the flowers I don’t get a chance to photograph…. Read More

One photo a day challenge: Day 194. I wanted to do some photography that I haven’t been doing as much of lately. I set out into my yard to hopefully see some birds. The birds were out there flitting about along the edges of the woods and moving across my yard. I just needed a few to get close enough for a decent photograph. There were woodpeckers, finches, and flycatchers moving about…. Read More
