I’ve always been interested in snakes. Ever since I was little. I always appreciate any chance I have to photograph snakes in the wild. Snakes are a challenging subject due to the way they move through our world. They are hard to see and can be challenging to get in good position to photogrpah. I think I often find snakes to photograph on accident or by pure chance. Sometimes I show up… Read More
I love to look in all the places to find photography subjects. We made a walkway in our yard. We put down a layer of mulch. Then we covered it with large flats slate stones from the stream in our woods. So occasionally I would lift up those large walking path stones. And occasionally there would be something interesting hiding in the mulch underneath. On this occasion I found a tiny little… Read More
I mostly manage to miss out on opportunities to photograph caterpillars. They are not a subject I often think about intentionally planning to photograph. I even often manage to miss out on photographing the most predictable to find caterpillar, the Monarch Butterfly Caterpillar. Monarch Butterfly Caterpillars are found in fairly specific time of year. This makes it easier to know when to look for them. The next question is where to look… Read More
It seems like butterfly species either feature bright colors or are completely drab. The Great Spangled Fritillary finds a happy medium. I love the subtle orangy brown color. And the black patterns across the wings make it more interesting. It is bright but nor showy. One feature of the Great Spangled Fritillary that I find interesting is the difference in the underside of the wing. Often butterflies have similar but diminished colors… Read More
I really like the Eastern Comma butterfly. The Eastern Comma has nice subtle coloring and shading. My favorite feature of the Eastern Comma butterfly is the unusual shape of its wings. Most of the butterflies we think of have large rounded wings in comparison to their bodies. The Eastern Comma on the other hand has almost the opposite of that wing shape. The shape of the Eastern Comma wing is almost like… Read More
I love the look of this almost completely white tiny little butterfly contrasted against a green leaf. This is also a fairly unique photo for me at least in a certain aspect. I was able to create this photo using a 60mm macro lens. That means that I had to get really up close to this little butterfly to make it appear this large in the frame. Most of my butterfly photos… Read More
I love going up to Cornell Botanic Gardens to do some macro photography. When I go there for macro photography my intended subject is flowers. It is always nice to find some other subjects in the mix as well. One of the nicest things about nature photography is you never know what will turn up. When you are looking to photograph flowers the last thing you really want to see is flowers… Read More
Late summer wildflowers are great photography subjects. A field with a mix of New England Asters and Goldenrod wildflowers. Watching for any subjects to approach the flowers. An American Bumble Bee lands on the New England Aster. Train the lens on the bee as it nestles down on the center of the flower to collect the flowers pollen. I am able to stand back and watch from a good distance for this… Read More
Flowers are great photography subjects for a variety of reasons. Obviously flowers themselves are beautiful subjects. But flowers also attract all sorts of other potential photography subjects. Sometimes you can just stand and watch one given flower and photograph multiple subjects as they pass by. I was able to stand pretty close to this flower and watch the subjects as they moved about. I liked being able to get this perspective looking… Read More
One photo a day challenge: Day 318. Spent some time exploring the the woods around our house today. I just walked through the woods with no particular intent. Wondering. Looking. Observing. Trying to find anything that looked interesting to train my lens on. Looking for any last bits of autumn colors left on leaves and trees. There wasn’t much color on leave, but I found some. But the most colorful sight in… Read More
