We most often think of butterflies like the Spicebush Swallowtail as being found on flowers. Maybe sometimes a butterfly would be found on another plant or on the ground. I thought it was interesting to find this Spicebush Swallowtail on the pavement. The asphalt background is similar in color but dissimilar in texture to the Spicebush Swallowtail. The Monarch Butterfly might be one of the first butterflies a person would think of in our region. Monarch Butterflies are often found on flowers particularly Milkweed flowers. It seems like butterfly species either feature bright colors or are completely drab. The Great Spangled Fritillary finds a happy medium. I love the subtle orangy brown color. And the black patterns across the wings make it more interesting. It is bright but nor showy. The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail is probably the most brightly colored butterfly I see where I live. Look at all that color. I really like the Eastern Comma butterfly. The Eastern Comma has nice subtle coloring and shading. My favorite feature of the Eastern Comma butterfly is the unusual shape of its wings. The Black Swallowtail is a large and beautiful butterfly. I would describe the Black Swallowtail as visually striking. But maybe for a different reason than most butterflies are. Many butterflies that people notice get noticed because they are brilliantly colored. On the other hand the Black Swallowtail is almost entirely black. I really like this photo. I think it is a pretty unique look at a butterfly species that at least I don’t see or photograph very often. This is the Baltimore Checkerspot. I have only had the opportunity to photographs the Baltimore Checkerspot on a few occasions. Often butterfly photographs show off the wings of the butterfly. And that is for good reasons.
