“The principle on which this country was founded and by which it has always been governed is that Americanism is a matter of the mind and heart; Americanism is not, and never was, a matter of race and ancestry. A good American is one who is loyal to this country and to our creed of liberty and democracy.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1943 From a fully white winter scen to a scene… Read More
I love waterfalls. I enjoy photographing waterfalls of all shapes and sizes. Giant falls down to a tiny trickle. Enormous drops of 200+ feet or just a few inches. Spring, summer, and fall all pose great times for waterfall photography. But what about winter? Cold. Dreary. Frozen. Winter.
I have been struggling a lot to create any photography this winter. I can’t remember the last time I photographed anything. I don’t know if it just the times we are living in getting me down. Or that I have just been too distracted and unfocused. Allowing the flow of social media to wash over me. Or maybe I am trying too hard to find “balance” by spending a little bit of… Read More
“For twelve years this Nation was afflicted with hear-nothing, see-nothing, do-nothing government. The nation looked to government but the government looked away. Nine mocking years with the golden calf and three long years of the scourge! Nine crazy years at the ticker and three long years in the breadlines! Nine mad years of mirage and three long years of despair! Powerful influences strive today to restore that kind of government with its… Read More
When I have the opportunity I really like to make the most of it. Getting out on an all day adventure to photographs a variety of different subjects. On this particular trip the subject was waterfalls. Not just any waterfalls, but frozen waterfalls. Frozen waterfalls might be the best kind of waterfall. They just look so unique. So, when their weather was cold enough long enough I picked a day and I… Read More
Spring recently arrived in upstate New York. And I always look forward to the new growth of spring. But here in this region of New York one never knows what the weather may bring. The date on the calendar is almost irrelevant.
One of my favorite landscapes to photographs a re frozen waterfalls. However, the weather is not always right to create a nice scene. Sometimes it just isn’t cold enough long enough to start to freeze the water. And sometimes there is no snow. The challenge to being someone who loves photographing specific occurrences in nature like frozen waterfalls is that you have to be able to get out there to take the… Read More
Weather here in upstate New York is fickle. It is especially so during winter. Temperatures can range from 50 degrees to -10 and the windchill can be punishing, The last several years there has not really been much in the way of significant snowfall during the colder months. For me that makes enjoying photography a little more challenging. I prefer to photograph nature, but the plain drab scenes during a winter with… Read More
Waterfalls are always nice subjects for photography. It is even more interesting when you can photograph them in different ways. One way to see waterfalls in a different form is to go see them during the colder months if you can. Watching how waterfalls transform as they begin to freeze when temperatures drop is so interesting. There are opportunities to capture all sorts of unique images. The water flow changes and ice… Read More
There are a lot of nice places to explore nature near where I live. One of my favorite local spots is Steege Hill Nature Preserve from the Finger Lakes Land Trust. There are several trails to explore while at Steege Hill. The trail I like the most is the yellow trail. And this photo illustrates my favorite part of that particular trail. On this section of trail there is a persistent layer… Read More
