My Love Of Frozen Waterfalls Drew Me To Return To Carpenter Falls

One of my favorite landscapes to photographs a re frozen waterfalls. However, the weather is not always right to create a nice scene. Sometimes it just isn’t cold enough long enough to start to freeze the water. And sometimes there is no snow.

The challenge to being someone who loves photographing specific occurrences in nature like frozen waterfalls is that you have to be able to get out there to take the photos whenever the conditions are just right. Fortunately we have recently had the kind of conditions I enjoy for that kind of photography. And I was able to take the day off of work to go pursue some photography.

I have a book that lists information for 200 different waterfalls in western New York. I have been working on trying to slowly visit them all. I have not made as much progress on that as I would have liked so far. And, once you discover a beautiful waterfall you never knew existed sometimes you want to go back and see it again.

Several years ago I visited Carpenter Falls. It is a beautiful waterfall. But it is not easy to get into position to take good photographs of the falls.

When I was there last there was information stating that a project was underway to build a view platform there and build more trails to make it more accessible. I have not been able to get back to the falls to see it since that project was completed.

This opportunity for winter frozen waterfall photography was the perfect reason to make the 1.5 hour drive out to Carpenter Falls to visit it and start my day of winter waterfall photography there.

Now there is a beautiful boardwalk that leads out to a large viewing platform. There are great views of the waterfall from the platform. It is a great spot to enjoy the scenic spot and watch the water pour over the cliff and plummet to the ground below. It is a much more comfortable and safe way to see the falls than previously.

There is also a well constructed and maintained trail that leads to the bottom of the gorge to view the falls from below. That trail did not exist on my previous visit. It is closed for the winter. I am happy to have another reason to return to this waterfall in the further to see it in another way I would not previously.
