This is like a chicken or the egg problem for which came first in my photography. Photographing flowers or photographing insects. I enjoy both these days and have for a while. When photographing flowers it is inevitable that you would notice more and more insects the longer you looked. So I suspect that my initial interest was in the flowers. And then upon discovering the insects I turned my lens there next…. Read More
Salamanders are so cool and very elusive. I wish I spent as much time looking for them and successfully finding them now as I did as a child. Sometimes I get lucky and just find a salamander right where I can train my lens on it. It always seems if I am intentionally seeking out a salamander to photograph I can never find one. I have seen salamanders on the edges of… Read More
My wife and I really enjoy camping. It is one of our favorite was to take a break from the every day. We try to find a campground that looks nice and scenic. Often staying at state parks. And we try to pick a campsite within the campground that seems at least a little more removed from the other campsites so we can have more privacy and more nature. This year we… Read More
I photograph a wide variety of subjects. I generally photograph what I love. And I love wildlife. I don’t photograph wildlife as much as I would like even though wildlife photography was my inspiration for starting this photography journey. I think a large part of this is because wildlife photography has a large component of luck. We rely on the animals showing up, and there is no guarantee that will actually happen…. Read More
One of the many things I never saw coming when I began this journey into photography is how much I would end up enjoying photography of insects. They come in so many shapes and sizes. And insects are so interesting looking. Especially when you are able to get a good look at them. And getting a good look at them is the whole point of nature photography. Capture a fleeting moment forever…. Read More
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love seeing the leaves change colors in the fall. Maybe that is you, but it definitely is not me. I love the changing colors of tree leaves. I love the time of year when the leaves start to change. The new colors appearing in the world bring a new sense of vibrancy to being outside in the cooling temperatures of the season. I am all for… Read More
I love to get out into nature. Often when I plan to go outside there is a specific reason. I want to photograph a waterfall. Or I want to hike some trails. And some places are great for specific experiences. But what really can make a place special is if it is a haven of a wide variety of natural experiences. This is what I love about Tanglewood Nature Center.
I have had fun hiking up several mountains over the years. Usually one of the best things about hiking up a mountain is the outstanding views of the surrounding area. Although I have climbed my fair share of mountains that did not have much if any view. But today I am here to talk about my favorite view. Hiking out to scenic views can be very rewarding. Sometimes it takes a lot… Read More
There are 3 key variables to think about in photography. ISO which controls how sensitive you film/camera is to light. Shutter speed, which controls how long light is let into the camera. Aperture or F stop. This controls how much light is allowed in through your lens. If you notice anything about these 3 variables it is that they are all related to how light interacts with your camera. Each of these… Read More
I am not always a morning person. And I am definitely not always a wake up before sunrise person. Especially in the summer when the days are longer and the sun rises earlier in the morning. But my job has gotten me used to getting up early for the morning commute often getting to see the sun rise on my job. And for a while I was in the habit of getting… Read More
