There are uncountable different types of insects in the world. If I wrote a post about every single type of insect I have photographed we could be here a while. That is if I could even identify what type of insect it was or if it was different from something else I have photographed before. So instead I created a few broad categories to write about separately. Insects that are easily identifiable… Read More
This is like a chicken or the egg problem for which came first in my photography. Photographing flowers or photographing insects. I enjoy both these days and have for a while. When photographing flowers it is inevitable that you would notice more and more insects the longer you looked. So I suspect that my initial interest was in the flowers. And then upon discovering the insects I turned my lens there next…. Read More
One of the many things I never saw coming when I began this journey into photography is how much I would end up enjoying photography of insects. They come in so many shapes and sizes. And insects are so interesting looking. Especially when you are able to get a good look at them. And getting a good look at them is the whole point of nature photography. Capture a fleeting moment forever…. Read More
Photography has lead me to become more interested in so many things. Parts of life I never really thought about that now I have a little more knowledge of and understanding of because photography guided me there. Butterflies were never more than a passing interest for me before photography. I didn’t know much about them. I still don’t know a lot. The only butterfly I could probably identify would be a Monarch… Read More
Grasshoppers are a pretty common insect. There are times of the year when Grasshoppers feel ubiquitous as they spring and jump from the ground with every step you take. Often times photographing a Grasshopper requires getting lower to the ground because that is where the Grasshoppers are. But on this occasion the Grasshopper was atop the fence around our flower garden. It was cool that the Grasshopper stayed put while I was… Read More
I photographed this Dragonfly at Watkins Glen State Park. If you know anything about Watkins Glen State Park a Dragonfly is not what most people are phjotgoraphing when they are there. Watkins Glen State Park is most known for its amazing gorge filled with beautiful waterfalls. Just google it, or better yet type in my archive search and you will likely see some photos of it. This is a link to one… Read More
I mostly manage to miss out on opportunities to photograph caterpillars. They are not a subject I often think about intentionally planning to photograph. I even often manage to miss out on photographing the most predictable to find caterpillar, the Monarch Butterfly Caterpillar. Monarch Butterfly Caterpillars are found in fairly specific time of year. This makes it easier to know when to look for them. The next question is where to look… Read More
We most often think of butterflies like the Spicebush Swallowtail as being found on flowers. Maybe sometimes a butterfly would be found on another plant or on the ground. I thought it was interesting to find this Spicebush Swallowtail on the pavement. The asphalt background is similar in color but dissimilar in texture to the Spicebush Swallowtail. I think that makes for an interesting photo. Especially when combined with the colors on… Read More
The Monarch Butterfly might be one of the first butterflies a person would think of in our region. Monarch Butterflies are often found on flowers particularly Milkweed flowers. However, I think I have photographed Monarch Butterflies on non-flower subjects more than any other butterfly I photograph regularly. I really like how this composition turned out. This Monarch Butterfly is featured on a nice and clean background as it sits on a milkweed… Read More
When I go out photographing anything I try to always be open to other possibilities. I don’t want to miss out on creating images of something nice because I was so focused on one thing that I missed out on everything else around me. I head out to Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge to photograph birds. But there are opportunities for all kinds of other photography if you are open to it. While… Read More
