I have only 100 photos of White-Crowned Sparrows. Almost all of the photos I have of White-Crowned Sparrows that I really like were taken this year. This year I was fortunate enough to see quite a few of these White-Crowned Sparrows over the course of a few days. They moved around quickly. But this one bird almost came out perfectly into the open from this bush. The only down side of this… Read More
The Dark-Eyed Junco is such a cool little bird. Simple colors. But makes an impact. Most of the the feathers covering the body are dark. But the beak and the belly are light colored. The well lit bird with a glint of light in the eye. Still remains dark. But with good contrast against a lighter scene surrounding the Dark-Eyed Junco. Photo details: Nikon D500. Nikon 300mm f/4. Focal Length 420mm. ISO… Read More
There are so many different ways to photograph birds. Every photo can easily have a unique look. Something you may love or something you may not really like. I find this photo interesting with the big contrast between light and dark areas. One thing I am not sure of is if I like how much the Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker blends in with the tree it is clinging to. It is a very accurate… Read More
Woodpeckers come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The colors on woodpeckers are often all similar, but with slight differences to patterns. The Red-Bellied Woodpecker is a larger variety of woodpecker. I love the monochrome appearance of the Red-Bellied Woodpecker with the burst of flaming red color atop the head. Such a beautiful bird perched on a tree branch looking off into the distance.
It is so cool to watch animals living there lives. What is more essential to life than eating food. This image captures a Pileated Woodpecker eating grapes off the vine. I love the large body of the Pileated Woodpecker hanging from the thin grape vines. You can see the Pileated Woodpecker plucking a grape from the vine. The motion of the Pileated Woodpecker’s head as it picks a grape to eat is… Read More
Sometimes all you need is a reason. A reason to get out and be in nature a little. A reason to step out the door and take some photos. There are so many reasons. Sometimes that reason is an event that is occurring at a given time. If you love birds a perfect reason to get out and experience a little nature and also take some photos one perfect event is the… Read More
Add features designed to attract wildlife and eventually its likely you will see wildlife. What wildlife you will see is not always easy to predict. Even if you add a feature designed to specifically attract a certain animal it doesn’t mean you will actually see that animal. I put up a Purple Martin house in hopes of attracting Purple Martins. However to date that has not occurred. What has transpired instead is… Read More
Purple Martins are cool birds. Fast and always on the move when I’ve see them. There is really only one time of year I ever see Purple Martins. Spring migration when the Purple Martins arrive back in the north is the best time for me to see them. There have been an increasing number of Purple Martin houses being put up in places in the Finger Lakes region that I visit. And… Read More
This photo does a few things that I like. The bird stands out from the background. This is helped by the background being mostly light monochrome colors and not a very busy background. The Barn Swallow has deep colors that sets it apart form the rest of the scene. Light is glinting off the Barn Swallows feathers. Posture makes a difference. And the Barn Swallow with its wings back and tail to… Read More
There are so many reasons to love birds. Bright colors. Sharp beaks and talons. Enormous wingspans. Amazing acrobatics. Ability to catch prey. Sometimes these features occur all in one creature. One bird I really like is this tiny little drab colors bird, the Eastern Phoebe. They are just un to watch Eastern Phoebes are hyper active little birds. They do not sit still for long. Moving from branch to branch. Exploding into… Read More
