Environmental Portraiture | Northern Pintail | New York

I have really enjoyed trying to create more environmental style wildlife photography.

Photographs of wildlife like the Northern Pintail that really show the environment in which the wildlife lives.

When I am out birding this has taken place by composing photographs that shoe the birds like this Northern Pintail but also show the foreground vegetation one might have to be looking through in order to actually see them.

Northern Pintails are not ducks usually seen where I live.

So I often travel to a nice wildlife refuge in our regions. There large flocks of birds can be seen during migration.

At this location I can see large flocks of Northern Pintail. Getting closer looks at them with the gear I use is more of a challenge.

Adopting a more environmental portrait style of wildlife photography has helped make this work for me.

I was able to photograph this Northern Pintail through the vegetation growing along the shore of the pond it is swimming in.

Photo details: Nikon D500. Nikon 300mm f/4. Focal length 420. ISO 400. 1/1600 sec. f/5.6.
