The Samoyed. This photo shows a little bit of everything that is part of a dog show. In the center is the main subject the Samoyed. On the left edge of the image you can see a little bit of the dog’s handler. In the background are two spectators and one of them is clapping for the dogs in the show ring. Photo details: Nikon D300S. Nikon 70-200mm f.2.8. Focal length 95mm…. Read More
The Saluki. Salukis have a cool elegant look to them. Not a particularly fancy looking breed of dog, but they have this simple elegance in the way they present themselves. When I see them I see the athlete in them. Because I am a runner I definitely see the runner in them. The dog that wants to be on the move. They look to my like they have the body of an… Read More
The Rottweiler. Rottweilers are powerful dogs. They always seem like they would be a fun dog to spend some time with, but I have never had the opportunity to know a Rottweiler in person. But, I do really enjoy this photo of a Rottweiler. The closed eyes and open mouth lend a bit of cuteness factor to a big, beefy, strong dog. I also love how the AKC banner is in the… Read More
The Rhodesian Ridgeback. I love Rhodesian Ridgebacks. For me they are just about the perfect combination of size and agility. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large dog that is also strong and muscular looking. But not only that they can get around and move. I love that they are known for being dogs that guard animals against lions. As a runner the fact that they have a great deal of endurance is… Read More
Redbone Coonhound I love the shade of color that the fur of the Redbone Coonhound has. It is just magnificent. And I love this photo for a very similar reason. I admittedly do not always pay a lot of attention to the handlers at dog shows I am photographing. I am 90% there for the dogs. The people don’t often figure into things for me. But when I saw this handler come… Read More
The Puli. This is the other dog breed that I am aware of that has chorded fur. The Puli is much small than the Komondor, however. And where the Komondor is generally white, the Puli is often black. I like this photo because it gives a good sense of motion. The fur is blown back off the Puli’s face as it moves. The motion of the moving fur reveals the Puli’s eye… Read More
The Pug. Tiny little dog. Small little wrinkled face. Short fur and floppy ears. Looking. Focused. Attention drawn. Watching for what might be in that hand. Photo details: Nikon D300S. Nikon 300mm f/4. Focal length 420mm. ISO 400. 1/320 sec. f/5.6.
The Pointer. Sleek muscular dog. Moving across the show ring. I love this dogs brown eyes. I also enjoy the very subtle spots of just noticeable color mixed into the white fur covering most of the Pointer’s body. The black sign in the background threw off the exposure for this image a bit. The black sign had good detail but the white fur of the dog was overexposed. I used a preset… Read More
Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen (PBGV) One of the few breeds of dogs I have probably photographed more during agility than in the dog show ring. I don’t know if there are just always a few of them at the conformation event and more at the agility event. Or am I just missing them at conformation and getting lucky to see them at agility. It seems so odd to me, because when you… Read More
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi. I am mostly a big dog person. I love big dogs. The kind of dogs I want to share my home with a mostly big dogs. Most of the dogs we have lived with have been dogs in the 80-100+ pound weight range. But if I was going to have a small dog, I sometimes think that maybe a Pembroke Welsh Corgi would be the one. They are… Read More
