Why I Love Photography

There are so many things to love about photography, but what I think it really comes down to for me is time.

Time is always moving. We never get a second back. No replays or do overs. We can’t press pause and stop to enjoy this one thing longer than the time we have in that moment.

But with photography we almost can.

I have a terrible memory. I can’t remember what I did yesterday or what sights I saw on our vacation half the time. But when I go back and look at my photographs the memories and the feelings often come flooding back. Even if I cannot remember exactly where a photo was taken I can feel what it was like to be in that place. My mind and my heart and my soul connect with my images to transport me there. I really hope that other people feel the same about the photos they take. I also, hop that they feel a little bit of that connected ness when they see my photography as well.

Photography is a way to capture a moment in time and never let it go. Sometimes it is an important life event. Other times it is something more mundane. Sometimes that mundane moment after time and with reflection becomes the more poignant part of life. And the photographs help us see that.

For me one of the biggest ways I appreciate photography is for how it helps me cope with the loss of and relive moments spent with our most constant companions, our dogs.

Sometimes I feel like I must be crazy for how many photographs I have taken of our dogs over the years. But they are always so important for me to have to look back on and remember our moments together. I often feel bad about how few photos I have of some of our first dogs, but that was when I was young and just starting out in photography and I didn’t realize how important it would be to me. The photography, and maybe the dogs too.

Photographs of camping trips, mountain adventures, or just play time in the yard. All important times. All captured forever by my camera. I can look back and appreciate all those times in my life.

My photography has a profound imp[act on my life. And I always hope that my photography can have just a little impact on the lives of others as well. A few times upon the loss of their beloved companion, people have remembered that I photographed their dog before and they have reached out to me. It means so much to me that people have remembered that I photographed their dogs and want a photograph as a way to remember a cherished part of their lives.

That is why I love photography.
