My Favorite Sport: Running

I am going to say something that a my younger self would never thought possible. I love running.

My first love in sports was baseball. Then I developed a love of football and played football throughout high school.

But developing a new sports love as an adult is a whole new joyful experience. Welcome to my life running.

Growing up I loved sports. But the act of running was not a joy. I was fine with the running component of sports in baseball, football, or basketball but the running wasn’t the goal. You ran in service of some other objective. And the running wasn’t mostly intermittent.

I hated any part of training that required running specifically as a way to maintain fitness. I never imagined loving a sport where you just run. Keep running. No don’t stop. You’re not quite there yet. Keep going. You can do this. Run.

I started running as part of a journey to improve my health. Then I made a commitment to get outside my introvert comfort zone and join a running club. This allowed me to meet friends and companions I will. Not soon forget.

I have experienced some of the highest highs and lowest lows through running. I suffered and struggled. But I have grown and strengthened as well.

I don’t know where my life will lead me, but I cannot imagine a day where I voluntarily stop running.

Running has also dovetailed with one of my other passions, photography. I enjoy photographing running events either as a spectator or a participant. Sharing in the joy of running with others in this way is a lot of fun. And I feel like it has allowed me to make some great art.

And even as a stopped following the big 4 sports baseball, basketball, football, and hokey mostly due to chord cutting I began to follow running. Watching and reading about running has been very interesting. Listening to podcasts about running. Runners telling their stories. Real people who are relatable. This is sport.
