My Favorite Waterfall

I am fortunate to live in an area that features an abundance of waterfalls. And I have become increasingly drawn too photographing waterfalls over the years. It is hard to think about what would be my favorite waterfall. Every waterfall is so unique. And every waterfall changes so much depending on when you visit.
But the presentation and environment surrounding the waterfall contributes to how it makes me feel.
Watkins Glen State Park is a well known state park in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. In the busy season tourists flock to the park to see all of the beautiful waterfalls this park features. The main feature of the park is a spectacular stream carved gorge. And the stream meanders through a variety for terrain from flat and with to narrow and steep. And the water pours over the edges and cliffs at varying heights to create spectacular falls.

And I know everyone has their favorite places at the park and there are too many beautiful spots to count.
But, my favorite waterfall at this park and that I have photographed is right at the beginning at the park. As a visitor you walk up from the visitor center and approach the gorge. On one side you see this imposing stone wall on one side of the gorge. And as you walk you see where the gorge is literally split open and water is pouring forth.
It doesn’t get more awe inspiring than two steep and narrow stone walls. Split open just enough for a person to walk between. And you watch the plume of water rush down the stone surface as it completes its journey through the gorge. The water flows down on stone surface. Then off a ledge. And the water falls. Then the water bounces off the opposing rock wall. And the water sprays and cascades off the stone surface onto the gorge flor at the bottom and flows away.

I don’t know if there is better bang for your buck. Where else can you walk up to such an imposing stone feature and watch the water slicing through it. IT is literally just a couple minute walk from the parking lot. And it is gorgeous and stunning and all of those adjectives one uses to try to describe the indescribable beauty of nature.
