My Favorite Running Photos

I don’t know if it good or bad that my favorite photos are both images that I created quite some time ago now. But at least that means I don’t have recency bias.
Part of the reason I like the first image from Lucifer’s crossing is that it required a lot of work to create that one image. I had to be on location to capture the photographs in the first place. Then review them and recognize what I could actually do with them. This image is a composite image created by combining 7 different images.

When I started out I did not know how to create an image like that. I had to research and learn how to do it. Practice and try to figure out what I was doing in the fly. And while I learned enough to make what I think is a pretty cool image, I probably could not make that image again right now because I have not kept up the practice of making these types of images and don’t remember exactly how to do it. I would need to relearn that skill. So Th ink that gives me appreciation for it.
Road races are not always my favorite types of events to photograph. Too many things get in the way. The backgrounds and surroundings can be too busy. But we do have a very popular local event that happens every year.

And for a good stretch of time I went out and photographed the Wineglass marathon and half marathon each year. But I have not done that recently because I got into cycling and now spend race day volunteering as bike support, so I don’t have the opportunity to photograph the race.
A few things I love about this Wineglass photo. I am really happy with the fact that I captured an image with a pretty clean background for a city street. The nice green grass and gray pavement. And the runner in this image, even though I know they are putting in a max effort performance they look completely calm. They are in control.
