My favorite Fungus Photos

Wow. Photographing fungus. Gotta say of all the ways I imagined photography taking me I definitely did not see this coming. How did this happen to me.
Fungus are interesting parts of nature. And the ones that colonize trees really catch my eye.

I don’t spend a lot of time photographing fungus but when I see something that catches my eye I can’t help it. Fungus is just a weird and sometimes disturbing looking natural phenomena. And that alone draws my interest.
I like to investigate things. Especially things that I don’t know much about. And I know very little about fungus. And what I do know I have learned indirectly through my interest in trees, forests, and ecosystems in general. But they are fascinating to look about and learn about.
Most people think of fungus in the form of large mushrooms that grow straight up from the ground. The kind that you buy in the grocery store. And that is what I thought for most of my life too.

But now I find myself really fascinated by the smaller stranger looking types of fungus.
But one of the biggest challenges for me is that like many things in nature fungus is cyclical. They grow, they “bloom”, they recede. I imagine for most of the lifespan of a fungus it is mostly undetectable by humans underground.
And the fact that I know little about fungus makes it hard to seek out specific subjects to photograph. I guess I could rectify that with some study. But for now I just let my eye find my subjects as I am out and about.
