My Favorite Snake Photo

Despite everyone being afraid of snakes and many people wanting to kill any snake they see snakes are relatively elusive and secretive. It is not very often that you will just be walking down the street and see a snake slithering down the sidewalk.
I on the other hand have always been fascinated by snakes. I can remember always being exited by and interested in snakes as a child. Eventually I even had a few pet snakes as an adult.
However, the fact that snakes are often in hiding. They live in holes or crevices. Or they hide waiting for prey to pass by so they can strike. Snakes are not often out on the move or just hanging around where they are plainly visible.
For these reasons, while I do have some pretty cool photos of snakes in the wild my favorite photographs of snakes have been photos I have taken of snakes in captivity at the zoo.

There are some cool looking snakes that live around the region I live in. But so many of the really iconic looking snakes live in exotic location. Areas of the world I will likely never go.
Some of the coolest looking snakes are also potentially dangerous. These snakes may have toxic venom or be large dangerous constrictors. Thus it is safest to observe them from behind glass. You would not want to be out haphazardly turning over rocks trying to find a rattlesnake to photograph.
Snakes have so many cool features about them. And some of these features directly relate to the ability to create captivating photos.

I love texture in photographs. The scales of snakes creates a texture unlike anything else seen in the natural world outside of reptiles. Snakes have eyes that differ from many other animals. They are shaped in a specific way and can often be colorful. And the body of snakes come in a wide variety of sizes and colors. And they often have intricate detailed patterns that may be unique that each individual animal.
Love them or hate them they are captivating to look at and instantly gain attention.
But please if you hate snakes, please leave them alone. They are not going to hurt you. If anything they are going to eat the other animals you consider to be pests like mice and rats etc.
Please don’t kill snakes.
