My Favorite Perennial Flower: Hydrangea

I have really grown to love flowers. I probably photograph them as much if not more than any other subject. Especially since I have really gotten to enjoy planting them and growing them right at home.

I really enjoy perennial flowers. Flowers that regrow and flower year after year. Observing how different flowers return and grow at different times of year. Their genetic makeup and the environment working together to shape how they grow and bloom.

My favorite of these flowers are Hydrangea.

Similar to my favorite annual flowers, Dahlias, one of the reasons I love Hydrangea flowers so much is that they exist in a wide range of varieties. There are a wide variety of different types pf Hydrangea. Some Hydrangea are more like large bushes or trees. Some are like small shrubs. And other Hydrangea are more like traditional flowers that regrow from the ground each season.

And amongst these wide assortment of varieties of Hydrangea is what seems to be an endless cornucopia of colors. If there is a specific color you rare looking for to plant in your hard or to photograph you can probably find a variety of Hydrangea that is that color. And Some Hydrangea even bloom with different colored flowers depending on the nutrient content for the ground where they grow.

One of my favorite things to do is visit the Cornell Botanic Gardens. Among the vast array of different types of flowers they have is a large collection of Hydrangea. There are Hydrangea of every type. So many beautiful colors there. Seeing the different shapes and colors of the plants and the way the blossoms unfold all in one place is pretty fun.

And another aspect that is fun is returning to the botanic gardens at different times of year to see which varieties and types of Hydrangea grow and flower during what times of year. That makes each visit just a little bit different and special.
