Like Hiking Take Your Camera

Hiking. I enjoy hiking. I often seek out trails to hike and explore them with my camera. This can vary from local river trails right in town, to local nature centers, nearby state parks and trails that traverse the entire state but passes nearby where I live.

Some of my weaknesses as a holographic and human is that I don’t always have the patience required for a given situation and I don’t always have the desire to plan things in advance. So, sitting and waiting or planning for just the right circumstances to occur so that I can create just the right photograph that I have been envisioning is a constant struggle for me.

I really prefer to be on the move. Getting out in the environment and accepting what the day has to offer me. Some days I will see something amazing. Other days I will see nothing worth taking my lens cap off for (almost never really, there’s always beauty in nature). I will often have a vague idea of what I would like to photograph but then the real challenge is finding it out on the trail.

I love to photograph a wide selection of nature themed subjects: deer, birds, reptiles, trees, flowers, and nature scenes. I get out on the tail and see what of those subjects I will encounter this day.

Movement and photography

What I will actually photograph may be different than what I see while I am outside. As a photographer what gear you are carrying with you often relates to the type of subjects you will be photographing. If I don’t have my telephoto lens then it is unlikely that I will be photographing birds today, but if I have that lens hoping to see birds I can still use it to photograph flowers.

At times I carry a wide range of tools with me. But, more and more often I carry a small subset of what I have with me. Often one camera body and one lens. This at least focuses my creative work to some degree. It helps me see better when I am out on the trails. I know what I am looking for or hoping to see. Then I hopefully don’t miss it.

There are certain things that happen in nature and are timed to specific times of the year. But outside of those things you never know what you might see when you are out on a trail. Getting outside and moving through nature avails you of the opportunity to see the widest variety of natural subjects possible in a given time frame. That is one of the things I like about moving on foot while I photograph nature.
