How To Decide Where To Start

When it comes to our creative pursuits, we all gravitate towards different things. I obviously gravitated towards photography. Maybe you are a painter or a sculptor.

But even within each type of creative endeavor there are sub categories and niches that we fall into. Some we like and some we avoid. Maybe you write fiction novels. Or Maybe you only write short poems.

For me there are certain types of photography I like to create and others that don’t hold interest for me. When it comes to the types of photography I choose not to pursue it isn’t because I don’t think those types of photography are good or valuable. I choose not to pursue them because they are not the types of subjects and creativity that capture my imagination or inspire me.

Double-Crested Cormorants

Some of the most commonly thought of types of photography might be wedding photography or poses family portraiture. Even creative photography working with models or product photography.

I have seen examples of great beautiful photography in those genres but they don’t resonate with me as the type of photography I want to create, even though I can recognize how exceptional those works of art can be.

I am really interested in the spontaneous. The fleeting moment. Things that happen one minute and are gone the next. And a lot of that takes place in nature.

Photograph what you love

Wildlife is the first thing that drew me into photography. As an animal lover and being inspired by National Geographic. Photographing wildlife was my first love in photography.

I also love my dogs. Heck I love all dogs everywhere. They melt my heart and fill me with emotions. So I try to capture them in art as much as I can. And every moment you spend with a dog is different from any other moment. You never know what is about to happen.

I also love the peace and solitude that can be found in nature. Getting out my door and just witnessing the amazing reality that is everything that happens around us without humans being involved. It can be one step out my door or up atop a mountain. They can have the same effect.

I love to capture the moments spent in nature.

There have been other areas of photography I have explored over the years. But the truth of it is follow your heart. Photograph what moves you. My journey through photography has often followed my life experiences.

What I pursue in my daily life becomes what I am inspired ot capture in front of my lens.
