One of the biggest reasons I wanted to take on a one photo a day challenge a couple of years ago was to give myself permission to photograph things I do not usually photograph. Do things that I am not good at. Take chances. Take risks.

I wanted to accept the fact that I would not likely be able to create my best work while working with new subjects and new techniques. This is something I struggle with when I photograph subjects I am familiar with. I expect myself to be at my best and not make mistakes. But of course I am human as we all are and mistakes happen, often more of them than I would like.

As part of pushing myself to do new things I frequently find myself looking around the house for something to photograph. In part due to that I decided to try photographing some home decor. And what better time to do that than during the holiday season.

Trying to figure out interesting ways to photograph home décor is a lot easier when the holiday decorations provide more light, color, and sparkle than what may be available the rest of the year.

I don’t know how happy or unhappy I am with any of the photos I took of this nature. And I don’t know what if anything I will use them for from here on out. But it was nice to move in a different creative way. I really had to think and decide things intentionally to try and capture images that I wanted.

Having to put more thought into these images will hopefully help me take time to put more thought into my more regular photography subjects to create more interesting images.
