My Favorite Still Life Photos

I don’t do a lot of photography off pre arranged or set up subjects. And I don’t do a lot of photography indoors. Most of what I photograph is the interaction of me with some mostly natural occurrence. Something I did not orchestrate.

Several years ago I undertook a challenge to create and share at least one photograph every single day for the entire year. The goal of this was to stretch my creativity. Find new ways to create photography. Work with different subjects.

The result of that was working with some still life type subjects.

Typical subjects seen in still life artwork are often bowls of fruit or something to that effect. This is often seen in painting or drawing. I am not sure I have ever really run across it in photography, but I am sure someone is doing it.

So I borrowed this form of artwork and incorporated it into what I was doing.

I really like to work with colors. I picked out subjects that stood out often. Then I tried to focus in.

I also love to use shallow depth of field. Pinpoint one small slice of the subject and throw everything else out of focus.

One of the things I like about this method with colorful objects is that while you may or may not be able to tell what else is in the photo aside from what is in focus you can still see bright colors and distinct shapes.
