Our Favorite Breed At The Show: Bernese Mountain Dogs

The more time I spend at dog shows the more dog breeds I am introduced to and learn more about. The more dog breeds I fall in love with. But the one breed that has really has captured our hearts forever is the Bernese Mountain Dog.

Bernese Mountain Dogs are in a lot of ways the optimal dog. They are large dogs but not overwhelmingly so. A Bernese Mountain Dog has energy enough to be active with you but is not going to be going non stop

Bernese Mountain dogs are friendly and affable but they are not the type of dog that will want to run up to every person and jump on them. They love company and being around people. They will accept all the petting and attention and then will just as happily go on their merry way once the attention has subsided.

Did I mention that Bernese Mountain Dogs are also beautiful dogs. They have a thick luxurious fluffy coat. Especially when well groomed, so maybe don’t look at our dogs. The tricolor markings are striking. And even though all Bernese Mountain Dogs have the same essential colors and markings there is enough variety in how those colors and marking present themselves in each dog that they all have their own distinct look and character.

If you are looking for a perfect family companion I could not recommend a Bernese Mountain Dog highly enough. However, make sure you go to a reputable breeder. The saddest part about a Bernese Mountain Dog is that they are not particularly long lived, averaging 8-10 years of life. They are susceptible to a variety of health concerns. That is why responsible breeding is important. The other option I cannot recommend highly enough it to find a reputable dog rescue and rescue your Bernese Mountain Dog and give them the home they so deserve.
