The motion of the river far below. Combined with the motion of the leaves blowing in the wind up high. Looking down into the river valley at Letchworth State Park. I like how the two different types of motion are combined in this photo. Photo details: Nikon D300S. Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3. Focal length 18mm. ISO 125. 5.0 sec. f/13. One of my favorite holiday traditions in our area is the Parade of Lights. This holiday parade features slow moving displays featuring lights. Some displays are people with lights. Other displays in the Parade of Lights are large vehicles adorned with lights. I like to set up where I can watch the parade move down the street right across from me. I bring my tripod and set up with a wide angle… Read More

A cemetery is a nice peaceful place to walk around and be in a very specific atmosphere. Stroll around and see if you can compose features that present the right kind of feeling. Incorporate different elements from the environment into the image. Perhaps a large foreground element. Then something else large in the background. Feature the sky overhead. Photo details: Sony Alpha 6000. Sony E 20mm f/2.8. Focal length 20mm. ISO 400…. Read More

During one camping trip I was inspired to try and capture an image different than normal for me. I sat by the fire watching it crackle. Noticing the light drain from the sky. Seeing the sparks of light fly up from the fire and into the sky. I wanted to try to capture an image that would show a combination of campsite features. The fading light in the night sky. Trees in… Read More

Often when I encounter wildlife it is a fleeting moment. There are few occasions when I get to sit and watch and study an animal. When I encountered this turtle it was just sitting along the bank of a pond. The painted turtle was enjoying basking in the sunlight. I was able to stand and watch. Slowly getting closer tot he painted turtle. After watching a while I was able to crouch… Read More

One species of snake I have been fortunate enough to photograph in the wild is the Northern Water Snake. I have seen the Northern Water Snake at a variety of locations. You might see one at a local park. Maybe you will see one in a body of water along the Finger Lakes Trail. There might even be one swimming in one of the Finger Lakes. I have been able to capture… Read More

I love to look in all the places to find photography subjects. We made a walkway in our yard. We put down a layer of mulch. Then we covered it with large flats slate stones from the stream in our woods. So occasionally I would lift up those large walking path stones. And occasionally there would be something interesting hiding in the mulch underneath. On this occasion I found a tiny little… Read More

I love supporting our local animal shelter. Fortunately we live in a community that supports them as well. One of the great things we get to do is attend local events that our shelter holds to raise awareness for the shelter pets. I am always happy to see people out with their dogs and it is even more meaningful when they are there to show support for our local shelter. Photo details:… Read More

In my work with shelter dogs I mostly worked with out local shelter. But on a few occasions I was able to go out and volunteer my time at a shelter a little farther away. I had a fun time meeting new dogs, playing, and taking photos. There is always a good time to be had meeting new dogs. Apollo really enjoyed playing with this dog toy. There was a nice big… Read More

For 8 years I volunteered at our local SPCA photographing dogs there so that they would have high quality photos to publish online. Having good photographs of shelter dogs helps them find homes quicker. Photos of happy dogs having fun show the dogs true personality and how that will manifest once they are out of the shelter. I had so much fun helping dogs in this way. I really miss doing this…. Read More
