I love spring. It is a time of growth and renewal. It feels like anything is possible.

And it is the beginning of the opportunities to start photographing flowers again. I never thought I would enjoy photographing flowers so much but it is something I have really grown to love. I look forward to it every year.

I always advocate for photographing what you love. One of the things I love most and that bring me the most joy are the animals I share my life with. We have been fortunate to fill our home with so many dogs and even cats over the years. They have all been a prominent part of my photography.

I often take my dogs outside in the yard and play with them and photograph them having fun. I like to hike. When I hike sometimes that includes a dog. And sometimes that also includes a camera. When a hike involves both a dog and a camera it is highly unlikely that a photograph of a dog will not be taken.

I will take any excuse to get outside and hike around and take some photographs. In case you hadn’t heard recently we experienced a total solar eclipse here in the United States. I am not an astrophotographer and I don’t typically photograph he night skies, but it was interesting.

As it turned out that path of totality crossed a large section of New York state. As I did some research it looked like it would be within a reasonable drive for me to get to a location where I could have the opportunity to experience totality during the eclipse. And from everything I was hearing and reading being in the path of totality is a completely different experience than being in any other part of the county when the eclipse occurs.

I recently ran the Finger Lakes Running Club Skunk Cabbage Classic. I have run this race several times in the past. This years race would be different for me. Different from my previous Skunk Cabbage races and different than most half marathons I have run in a while.

2024 is a new year with new experiences on deck.

I grew up loving sports. Mostly baseball, football, and basketball. Reading newspapers and magazines and seeing the amazing photographs that the sports photographers were able to capture was always something I loved.

I never thought I would be a sports photographer. When I first started in photography sports was the farthest thing from my mind as a subject. But at some point I began to think about merging two things that I love once again in sports and photography.

The likelihood that I will ever be down on the field at a MLB, NFL, or NBA game is slim. But, that doesn’t mean I cannot enjoy creating sports photography. There are plenty of ways to enjoy sports photography right in your back yard.

Winter After Spring

Spring recently arrived in upstate New York. And I always look forward to the new growth of spring. But here in this region of New York one never knows what the weather may bring. The date on the calendar is almost irrelevant.

Photographing wildlife is one of the most amazing experiences I have had as a photographer. Have I ever photographed a Lion? No. Have I ever photographed a wolf? Not in the wild. Have I ever photographed a grizzly bear? No.

Eastern Chipmunk at Tanglewood Nature Center.

You may be asking yourself, how amazing of an experience can photographing wildlife be if I haven’t photographed any of these oft depicted big game animals?

Photographing local wildlife is amazing, because that is the wildlife you see and interact with on a daily basis. They are the animals that you experience. You can get to know them.

The best way to practice photography regularly is to use what you have available. So in that vein, I am going to write a series of blog posts about how I do that.

First and foremost in photography you obviously need a camera. Any camera. Any camera at all.

You can create beautiful images with any camera. This is especially true in an age when the majority of photographed are viewed on computer monitors. You don’t need a camera with a ton of megapixels. A cell phone camera will do just nicely.

A Good Old Adventure

I love a good adventure. And adventure can mean so many different things. Usually for me an adventure means getting outdoors in some way.

A friend and I were planning to go for a nice long hike. Hopefully hitting some new to us trails. But, things didn’t go as expected.

The morning of our planned adventure it was a snow storm. We couldn’t really find the trail parking spot indicated on the map due to the snow. It didn’t seem safe to just park on the side of the road due to the snow and plows.

A big part of life is about who you meet along the way. There are a lot of things I would never have done if I did not meet the right people at the right time in my life. Being an introvert it sounds strange to my own ear to say that a big part of life is those you meet along the way. But it is not about the quantity of people you meet along the way, it is about the quality of people you meet along the way.
